Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a major honors show approaches, one notices a clamor to include additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
