The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
